Daniela Slater, the Italian
Born and raised in Ontario, Canada, I was brought up by European (Italian) parents and much of my time was spent listening to my mother encourage me to speak Italian. "But mom, no one speaks Italian at school", I would remind her. Thanks to her perseverance and somewhat commanding voice, I would often try to speak her native language, But I guess from listening to her speak to my father and grandmother and other visiting relatives, the language was always close at hand. So, today, I am grateful as I prepare to achieve my lifelong goal to visit Tuscany. I can understand, speak to be understood and even write in Italian, and that's because I have retained much of what I heard. However, I have decided to listen to audio tapes in the meantime to enhance my understanding of the language to the "proper" Italian and broaden my vocabulary and understanding of the verbs. "un, una", is it masculine or feminine? Do I say "a", "e", "o" or "i" at the end of that word? I'm learning in some cases, there's no logic; just memorize it. It will come !
My parents are from an area just outside the historical and ancient city of Rome. My dad was from Sora, Italy, which is situated in the province of Frosinone. My mother is from outside of Sora in a town called Carnelo, which is also in the province of Frosinone. Sora, Lazio, Italy is one of the major centres of the province of Frosinone. The river Liri, runs along the city where the valleys of Liri, Roveto and Comino meet. Hydroelectric plants use this river as their source. Sora is known for producing remarkable wood furniture and prospers through industry, farming and commercialization. Population of Sora: 16,000 Population of Frosinone: 48,122 Patron Saint: Santa Restituta celebrated on May 27 Outside of my parents' home town areas, Italy is divided into many regions which have their own foods, language dialect, specialties and uniqueness. Italy is known as the belpaese or beautiful country which tests all the pleasurable senses in one of earth's sole and safe places. Paris may be well known for fashion but Italy is close (literally). Italy is the country where people live to eat the food, slowly, and bask in it, otherwise known as "Slow Food". Italians are devoted to their fresh foods and fine cuisine. Italy has more UNESCO World Heritage sites than any other country on earth, leading with 44 sites. Rome, Venice and Florence lead the way with all their artistic great achievements. The city with Europe's biggest and most modern trade fairs, Milan, is planning a major residential development. Venice has not changed its' appearance much in decades but has just built a "sleek new bridge" over the Grand Canal. The countrysides of Tuscany, the mountainous Alps, seaside escapes are some of the beauty found in Italy. A trip to Italy is not the same if all you did was bask in the awesomeness of the scenery. Sipping a cappucino, biting into a biscotti or devouring a pizza while admiring the surroundings in the hot Mediterranean sun and sharing conversation, is all the lifestyle you could desire. http://www.italyworldclub.com/lazio/frosinone/sora.htm http://www.panoramio.com/photo/26553536 http://www.webtender.com/db/ingred/327) Website produced by Daniela Slater, 2848517, PSYC210 for: Bob Brandes, R.Psych (Limited Register) Academic Coordinator Associate Chair, Centre for Psychology Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences Athabasca University |
My Parent's Hometown
Sora, the city where my dad was born is in the province of Frosinone where my mom was born. I visited this pretty, little, but bustling town when I was nine years old, but remember it best when I visited at 18 years of age...
Italy, in its' beauty and splendour...
